The vast majority of Germans in World War II were Catholics. Like many funeral services today, a small card (usually baseball card size) were printed with a photo and brief history of the deceased. This custom has existed for several centuries and was very prevalent during the Second World War. This particular card was printed in remembrance of: Franz Maierhofer Franz was a Private in the motorized Infantry and was a combat veteran of the brutal fighting during the 9 month battle known as the Kuban Bridgehead on the Taman peninsula. The battle for Kuban lasted from January 1 to October 9, 1943 and ended when the German and Romanian forces were forced to retreat back thru the Kerch Straight and the Crimean peninsula.
