Description: The state of Arizona is under a stay-at-home order which is making our shipping difficult. We are extending our shipping limit to 20 days. We hope to ship in less time, and we hope soon to be back to our old policy of ten days. We ask for and hope for your patience. Once upon a time, and a very good time it was, chess sets were often made of wood and always made by master craftsmen. Immortal names like "Jaques and Sons" and "Ayres" and "Uhlig" dominated the chess set market. After World War II a French firm, Lardy, set out to capture the wood chess set market. They made both high-end collector's sets and ready-market sets. This is a tournament set. Lardy is out of business, so this set is a collector's item. Judging from the condition this set is from the 1950s. The kings are 3 3/8 inches tall, with 1 1/4 inch bases. All the pieces are in very good condition without any noticeable "Lardy Leans," a bending of the pieces by some loose lathe work; the kings and queens have slight leans that I cannot capture with my poor photography skills. The men are weighted, without cracks. The felt is well-worn; some of the weights are beginning to bulge out, making one pawn a little tippy. The varnish is flat, and on the Black men worn through on some edges; one Black has tiny chips; the box is in acceptable condition; the box is a contemporary cigar box that we have added for convenient storage. As far as we can tell there is no lingering tobacco scent. We have added a masonite board that is still largely in its shrinkwrap. You may order the set without the board if you prefer; contact us for price details. I, Ed Yetman, have been a tournament director for 40 years and verify that this set is legal for tournament play according to the U.S. Chess Federation rules, though other directors may disagree. A similar Lardy set, without board, recently sold for $325 at auction. We combine shipping! To combine, place all your purchases in the shopping cart and press "proceed to checkout." Follow us!
