Description: They Cage the Animals at Night: The True Story of an Abandoned Child's Struggle for Emotional Survival Paperback by Jennings Michael Burch The heartbreaking, iconic true story of an abandoned little boys horrific journey through the American foster care system. On a misty evening in Brooklyn, Jennings Michael Burchs mother, too sick to care for him, left her eight-year-old son at an orphanage with the words, Ill be right back. She wasnt. Shuttled through a bleak series of foster homes, orphanages, and institutions, Jennings never remained in any of them long enough to make a friend. Instead, he clung to a tattered stuffed animal named Doggie, his sole source of comfort in a frightening world. Here, in his own words, Jennings Michael Burch reveals the abuse and neglect he experienced during his lost childhood. But while his experiences are both shocking and devastating, his story is ultimately one of hopethe triumphant tale of a forgotten child who somehow found the courage to reach out for love, and found it waiting for him. Publisher- Berkley Paperback- 304 pages ISBN-10 0451159411 I have read dozens of books written by Holocaust survivors, and they can be very hard to get through. But I read so many of those, because they are amazing testaments of the human spirit's ability to endure...to hope. This book isn't exactly that. He endures, but mostly because of necessity, not necessarily thinking things will get better. But what he endured...there were times I was crying so hard I could barely continue. This little boy - this book makes you want to somehow go back in time and save him. And the things he did to make it to the next day - how did people not notice or care about these kids!?! It's unfathomable that these things happened, truly. At the end of the book, you know he grew up and didn't have to go through those things anymore, but you also realize there are thousands of children out there, right now - in real time, going through very similar situations that he did, and if you don't feel helpless and angry by the time you're done reading, there truly is something very wrong with your heart. This book was written simply, which added to the endearment of this little boy who found himself alone - over and over again. I just cannot recommend this book enough.
