The Farmers' Salt Book 1930s—Meat Curing—Stock Feeding—Recipes—Sausage Making

Description: The Farmers' Salt Book—Practical Ways to Make and Save Money With Salt—Meat Curing—Stock Feeding—Miscellaneous Uses, by International Salt Co., Scranton, Penn. Originally published in the mid-1930s. Reprinted in 2016 by Nation Builder Books, Merbane, NC. 6 x 9 paperback booklet,30 pages. The International Salt Company was incorporated in August, 1901. A year later the company bought the stock and assets of the recently bankrupt National Salt Company. By 1934, International Salt was a holding company for six subsidiaries: Avery Salt Company (West Virginia), Detroit Rock Salt Company (Michigan), Eastern Salt Company (Massachusetts), Independent Salt Company (New York), International Salt Company, Inc. (New York), and Retsof Mining Company (New York). All of the subsidiaries operated rock salt mines and evaporated salt plants and distributed salt. In 1940, the International Salt Company decided to sell four of its subsidiaries--Avery Salt Company, Detroit Rock Salt Company, International Salt Company, Inc., and Retsof Mining Company. Since these companies are listed in this brochure, I can date the original to the mid-1930s. This is confirmed by photographs of farm operations using equipment of the period. The mining operations at Retsof, New York, covering and area of ten square miles, were the largest salt mine in the United States, and second largest in the world. Mining was hampered by flooding and a collapse in March 1994, and the mine was entirely abandoned by September 1995. Contents include: Stock Feeding; Meat Curing, including Chilling carcass; Curing; Cutting; Drying; Lard rendering; Removing entrails; Scalding; Scraping; Storing cured meat; Canning; Recipes (Cornbeef; Headcheese; Liver sausage; Panhaus; Sausage; Scrapple); Method of making sausage; Miscellaneous Farm Uses; Household Uses. Please note this is a new photoduplicated reproduction, not an original.
