Description: The time was two years before the start of the American Civil War, and the political issue of slavery, its legality, and expansion into the new territories and states was becoming more intense. The pro-slavery proponents, basically represented by the Democratic Party of the Southern States, and the anti-slavery abolitionists, basically represented by the Republican Party of the Northern States, were at each others throats in the defense of their approaches to slavery. This paper The Fanaticism of the Democratic Party, Speech of Hon. Owen Lovejoy, of Illinois, Delivered in the U. S. House of Representative, February 21, 1859, is a prime example of the growing battle between the slavery fans and the abolitionists. The paper, which measures approximately 6 x 9 inches, contains 8 pages of two-column text presenting the arguments of the Republican Party (abolitionists) against the Democratic Party (“fanatic” supporters of slavery). This copy of the speech was printed by Buell & Blanchard, Printers, of Washington, D.C. in 1860 so that it would be available to support the Presidential election campaign of 1860 that resulted in the election of Abraham Lincoln. The paper is unbound, with chipping along the spine edge and some dog-earing on the upper outside corner. The text is printed in a small font on paper that is lightly tanned. The overall condition of the paper is good. The illustrations accompanying this description show the first page of the paper and a 2-page spread of pages 4 & 5. Owen Lovejoy (January 6, 1811 – March 25, 1864) was an American lawyer, Congregational minister, abolitionist, and Republican congressman from Illinois. He was also a "conductor" on the Underground Railroad. After his brother Elijah Lovejoy was murdered in November 1837 by pro-slavery forces, Owen, a friend of Abraham Lincoln, became a leader of abolitionists in Illinois, condemning slavery and assisting runaway slaves in escaping to freedom.
