It allows you to use the viewer without batteries so it saves on batteries and maintains even illumination. A few notes regarding the installation and use: As shown in the last picture, the viewer end clips over the Realist contacts (note that the instructions or the viewer are not for sale here, you will get what you see in the first picture). The output is rated 2.4V at 0.3A. It will work well with the original No. 14 bulbs or the bulbs that I sell in my ebay store.
