When it started in 1913, the Standard Oil Bulletin captured the pioneering spirit of Chevron's predecessor company Standard Oil (California), or SOCAL, through its bold, striking cover illustrations. The artists were in the vanguard of what became known as the California Style, representing a unique convergence of social philosophies, artistic ideals, progressive attitudes and the ferment of the times. The Bulletin audience was primarily employees but it also provided a medium for communicating to select members of the public.
