Description: "SPIRIT OF 76" OIL PAINTING ATTRIBUTED TO ARCHIBALD WILLARD (1836-1918) POST 1890 versionSold as an attribution ! Sold as an attribution. Keep that in mind.7th photo was taken with a flash. Sight: 18 1/2 " x 24 3/4" Framed: 22 1/4" x 28 1/2" was an American painter who was born and raised in Bedford, Ohio. He was the son of Samuel Willard, the pastor of Bedford Baptist Church in town.Willard had an interest in art ever since he was a child and often scribbled on barns and other structures at home. As a young man, Willard moved to Wellington, Ohio and began working for the wagon maker, E.S. Tripp. He began as a basic wagon painter, but eventually was allowed to paint elaborate decorations that were popular at the time. Willard joined the 86th Ohio Infantry in 1863 and fought in the Civil war, but was not heavily involved. During this time, he painted several scenes from the war.Unsigned, but several of his later copies were not signed. Estimates of the number of copies he made after the original version from 1875 range from at least 14 and up and into the early part of the 20th c. We believe this to be one of those. There was an old label attached verso to the stretcher , but all we can read on this is "Boston" . the label more than likely was an old gallery label from the first half of the 20th c. Condition: Various degrees of light but stable craquelure. Surface quite clean. never lined. A period frame shows wear with very small losses.
