Description: Sabal causiarum is a large-leafed Sabal species native to the island of Puerto Rico, as well as a few other islands in The Caribbean. It typically grows to a height of 10 meters (33 feet). Sabal causiarum is a palm that prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of soil types. It is also tolerant of salt spray and wind, making it a popular choice for coastal landscapes. It's an absolutely massive palm in the landscape, and a great centerpiece for a large yard. Sabal causiarum can also tolerate quite hard frosts and freezes, making it suitable for zone 9a and possibly slightly lower. It's not exactly a slow-growing palm. A very sturdy palm with a fat, stocky trunk and thick, wind-resistant leaves. The palms in my pictures are growing in Gainesville, Florida, which is rated as a USDA zone 9a. We see significant feezes here on a yearly basis into the low 20sF and possibly even below 20F on occasion. Germination of Sabal causiarum seeds is pretty easy. Give it some bottom heat and keep the seed-starting media (I use a 50/50 mix of peat moss/perlite) moist but not sopping wet.
