Description: REMBRANDT VAN RIJNA Scholar in his Study ("Faust") Original etching, engraving and drypoint, circa 1652. This printing is from the late 1600s or 1700s, sometime before Henri Louis Basan retouched the plate in 1805-1810. IT IS NOT ONE OF THE MANY HELIOGRAVURE REPRODUCTIONS THAT ARE LISTED ELSEWHERE ON EBAY. 8 1/2x6 1/2 inches, thread margins or trimmed to plate. Biƶrklund's fourth state (of 4); Usticke's fourth state (of 7); White and Boon's fourth state (of 4); New Hollstein's sixth state (of 7). With the divide in the beam of light directed towards Faust's face, but before the heavy retouching work by Basan and the complete revision by Jean (where Faust looks like a boy). The print is on laid paper, attached to a backing sheet that is coming loose at two corners. (See photographs.) Faint spots of discoloration, but otherwise quite fine condition. Other impressions in this state generally sell for $5,000-$8,000 at auction and much more at retail. Serious offers welcome.
