RARE 13.5” ANTIQUE JAPANESE SATSUMA MOON VASE Gilt Gosu Blue C1850 Att KINKOZAN

Description: RARE ANTIQUE Meiji JAPANESE SATSUMA KYOTO MOON VASE Gilt Gosu Blue C1850 13.5” Attributed to KINKOZAN This listing is for an exquisite oval MOON shaped vase from the Meiji period of Japan, showcasing fine artistry and very fine hand painted and enamelled intricate detailing. Made from porcelain from around the YASU HASUDA area in Japan, this antique vase is a testament to Japanese culture and history. The vase depicts traditional Japanese motifs and designs, making it a valuable addition to any collection. Its unique shape and size make it suitable for display in any room of the house. A mid-to late 19th century Japanese. There are no marks for identification on the base but from my research it would date around C1850-80. I have found another identical vase named for KINKOZAN as the artist. (Please see last photo). It is certainly not a form readily seen and the oval moon shape is quite unique. The hand painting and gilding artwork on the patterning is particularly meticulous. This impressive figural Kyoto Satsuma vase with beautifully detailed costumes and faces, the sides with wide panels of cranes or Phoenix birds in relief form, flying up amongst clouds of Peach green and blue. Bold enamel geometric borders applied to the to frame the two oval picture panels back and front. The two panels how figural scenes of the Ancients or Scholars. The top lip is very attractive with different coloured panels in a roll over style with a variety of designs, echoed on the foot patternation. The neck itself is a beautiful combination of chrysanthemum flowers and hexagonal shapes a very colourful display, with central round pattern of magnified flowers. Marked with Japanese characters either side of foot, including “YASU HASUDA” which is the area in Japan they were made. And on the opposite side a possibly the signature for the artist KINKOZAN….. !! MEASUREMENTS: Height 13” x 7” wide x 5” deep at the widest point which is the top of vase to include the rolled over style neck. CONDITION: Excellent antique condition with minute crazing throughout. Gilding is good with very little loss….one very tiny nibble to the rolled over neck edge..commensurate with age….please see photos. RESEARCH NOTES: According to Gotheborg.com. "Satsuma Gosu Blue was produced in very limited quantity in Kyoto in the mid-19th century, and is now the most sought after of the Satsuma wares." THis has several sections of the distinct blue. Gosu blue Japanese Gosu blue enamel The colour Gosu Blue is an on glaze enamel found on a type of Satsuma which used to be called Imperial Satsuma in mid to late 19 century. Gosu Blue is distinctive and very thick, that can be either dark blue, green or black depending on the firing. "Satsuma Gosu Blue" was produced in very limited quantity in Kyoto in the mid-19th century, and is now the most sought after of the Satsuma wares. Gosu blue is usually dense, and even when thinly applied one cannot see through it, and it does not get less dense when thin. KINKOZAN: The glaze displays an overall even fine crackle. The workmanship is superb and can be catalogized as "miniature art" characterized by the painstaking details, often found in the workshop of Yabu Meizan and Seikozan. The Kinkozan family established their pottery business first in 1645 and by the end of 19th century, it had become the largest studio producer of Satsuma ware. By the 1850s, Kinkozan Sobei (Kinkozan IV; 1824-84) started to export the wares to the west, particularly to America, together with the Kyoto manufacturer Taizan VIII. This continued and expanded under the leadership of Kinkozan V (1868-1927) until his death in 1927 when the studio closed. Although due to the large output from the studio and target of the markets, the quality varied considerably, Kinkozan did produce some of the best satsuma pieces from Meiji period.
