Description: **** P I T C A I R N I S L A N D S **** 2 0 1 2 CHARLES DICKENS 200th Birth Anniversary Sc.#744-747, S.G. 870-873, Mi.#869-872 Charles Dickens (1812-1870) is regarded as the greatest English writer of the Victorian era. He published "Pickwick Papers" in 1836, and "Oliver Twist" in Queen Victoria's Coronation Year (1837), and unforgettable books every year or two after that. He created some of the world's best known fictional characters in his books, such as Great Expectations, Martin Chuzzlewit, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, Nicholas Nickelby, and others, and they are etched in English Literature lore. Pitcairn Island's stamps show some of these popular fictional characters - Mrs Sarah Gamp from Martin Chuzzlewit on the $1.00 value, the Artful Dodger from Oliver Twist ($1.80), Mr Pickwick from Pickwick Papers ($2.10), and Scrooge from A Christmas Carol ($3.00). Their images also appear on the stamp sheet margins. Fine and interesting issue. This was the second of four Pitcairn stamp issues commemorating the contributions of some of the world's most well-known people. Other issues in this series commemorated Charles Darwin (2009), John F. Kennedy (2013), and Nelson Mandela (2014).
