I was a field tester for Stihl in 1984 when Stihl brought out the first prototypes of the 084 and 064 chainsaws, these two saws are now sold as the MS661/MS880. Stihl used me to test these saws because they knew I could put enough hours on the saw in 5 months to completely wear it out and they needed that quick information. One question I had for them back in 1984 was why they don't make proper felling dogs for their saws. The sad answer they gave was well nobody but us West Coast Timber Fellers even knew they were needed. Why should we spend money to build something when the people don't even know any better? The other sad reality is that most of our dog sales are to people who buy them because they think it looks good. Of course once you use our dogs it's near impossible to go back to no dogs or small dogs. Chainsaw dogs greatly reduce the effort required to fell and buck a tree. I feel one of our greatest products has been dogs for the little MS170-180 Stihl saws, until we started building them back in 2013 nobody had ever thought of it.
