Super Bowl LVIII was an American football game that was played to determine the champion of the National Football League (NFL) for the 2023 season. A rematch of Super Bowl LIV, it was played between the National Football Conference (NFC) champion San Francisco 49ers and the American Football Conference (AFC) champion and defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, who won the game. The game was played on February 11, 2024, at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada. It was also the second simulcast in Super Bowl history since Super Bowl I. It was the second Super Bowl to go into overtime, the first being Super Bowl LI. The Kansas City Chiefs also became the first team since the New England Patriots to win back-to-back Super Bowl titles, the New England Patriots doing so after winning Super Bowl XXXIX in 2005. This was the first Super Bowl to be held in the state of Nevada. It marked the third straight year that the Super Bowl has been played in the Western United States, following host cities Inglewood, California, in 2022 and Glendale, Arizona, in 2023. The game was televised nationally by CBS, streamed on Paramount+, alternatively broadcast on youth-oriented sister network Nickelodeon, and televised on the Spanish-language network Univision. The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league's American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The team was founded in 1959 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt, and was a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). In spring 1963, the team relocated to Kansas City,[12][13] and assumed its current name. The Chiefs joined the NFL as a result of the merger in 1970, and the team is valued at over $3.7 billion. Following Hunt's death in 2006, his wife, Norma, and children became legal owners of the team. After Norma's death in 2023, the Hunt children inherited her stake in the franchise. Clark Hunt, one of the Hunt's children, has served as chairman and CEO since 2006 and is the ultimate authority over personnel decisions. He is also the team representative at league owner meetings. The Chiefs won three AFL championships, in 1962, 1966, and 1969, and were the second AFL team (after the New York Jets) to defeat an NFL team in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game, when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV. That victory on January 11, 1970, was the final game before the leagues' merger went into full effect. The Chiefs were also the second team, after the Green Bay Packers (whom they played in Super Bowl I), to appear in more than one Super Bowl (and the first AFL team to do so) as well as the first to appear in the championship game in two different decades. Despite post-season success early in the franchise's history, winning five of their first six postseason games, the team struggled to find success in the playoffs for decades, including losing ten of eleven playoff games from 1993 to 2017, which included an eight-game losing streak. Since then, the Chiefs have risen to dynastic performance under head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes, appearing in three Super Bowls since 2019 and winning two, LIV and LVII. The Chiefs' first mascot was Warpaint, a nickname given to several breeds of pinto horse. Warpaint served as the team's mascot from 1963 to 1988. The first Warpaint (born in 1955, died in 1992) was ridden bareback by rider Bob Johnson who wore a full Native American headdress. Warpaint circled the field at the beginning of each Chiefs home game and performed victory laps following each Chiefs touchdown. On September 20, 2009, a new Warpaint horse was unveiled at the Chiefs' home opener. Warpaint was ridden by a cheerleader in its return. The Chiefs again retired Warpaint in 2021 as a part of their commitment to stop the use of Native American imagery. In the mid-1980s, the Chiefs featured a short-lived unnamed "Indian man" mascot which was later scrapped in 1988. Since 1989 the cartoon-like K. C. Wolf, portrayed by Dan Meers in a wolf costume, has served as the team's mascot. The mascot was named after the Chiefs' "Wolfpack", a group of rabid fans from the team's days at Municipal Stadium.[136] K. C. Wolf is one of the most popular NFL mascots and was the league's first mascot inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2006. The Chiefs have employed a cheerleading squad since the team's inception in 1960. In the team's early days, the all-female squad was referred to as the Chiefettes. In addition to the Cheerleaders, in the early 1970s, there was also a dance/drill team that performed for pre-game and halftime. From 1986 to 1992, the cheerleader squad featured a mix of men and women.[143] From 1993 to 2019, the all-female squad has been known as the Chiefs Cheerleaders, and in 2020, one male joined the team. The official logo was unveiled on February 13, 2023; it follows the updated logo template established by Super Bowl LVI, with the traditional Roman numerals featuring imagery reflecting the host city/region (in this case, the Las Vegas Strip and the Las Vegas sign). The numerals are also slanted inward to evoke the architecture of resorts such as the Bellagio and Wynn Las Vegas. In the National Football League, the Team Captain designation is a team-appointed position that designates certain players as leaders on and off the field. The captains program was implemented by the NFL Player Advisory Council established by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in conjunction with the NFL Players Association. Starting in 2007, the league began permitting teams to name up to six players as captains. Brady is one of only two quarterbacks to win a Super Bowl in their first season as a starter. He is also the only quarterback to reach 200 regular-season wins. Brady has never had a losing season as a starting quarterback. He has led his team to more division titles than any other quarterback in NFL history. With a postseason record of 30–11, he is first all-time in playoff wins and appearances for an NFL player, including an NFL-record eight consecutive AFC championship games between 2011 and 2018 (and 13 overall). Brady has also been selected to 14 Pro Bowls, which ties the NFL record for most selections. For regular season and postseason combined, Brady is first all-time in career passing yards and touchdown passes. He is one of only two players in NFL history to amass 70,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards Brady is second all-time in career regular season passing yards, second in career touchdown passes, and tied for sixth in career passer rating. He is first in postseason career completions, passing yards, and passing touchdowns, and is fifteenth in postseason career passer rating. He also tied the record for the longest touchdown pass at 99 yards to Wes Welker. He is the only quarterback in NFL history named to two all-decade teams, having been named first-team for both the 2000 and 2010 squads (the latter of which he was selected to unanimously). He was one of only 10 quarterbacks selected to the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time team (and one of only four players active at the time they were selected), encompassing the entire 100-year history of the league at the time. For his alleged involvement in the Deflategate football-tampering scandal, Brady was suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season. Brady and the Patriots won two of the next three Super Bowls, making him the record holder for most Super Bowl wins by a player, and the oldest quarterback to win a Super Bowl, at 41. Super Bowl LVII was an American football game played to determine the champion of the National Football League (NFL) for the 2022 season. It was the 57th Super Bowl and was played on February 12, 2023, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, with kickoff time at 4:30 PM MST (UTC-7). The American Football Conference (AFC) champion Kansas City Chiefs defeated the National Football Conference (NFC) champion Philadelphia Eagles, 38–35. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was named the game's Most Valuable Player. Both teams finished the regular season with a league-best 14–3 record. The Chiefs were playing in their fifth overall Super Bowl, having played previously in Super Bowls I, IV, LIV and LV. The Eagles were looking for their second Super Bowl victory after Super Bowl LII, having also appeared in XV and XXXIX. Three of the previous five Super Bowls had featured either the Chiefs or the Eagles, though this was the first time the two teams would meet in the championship. The Chiefs' victory was their second in four years and their third overall. After the Eagles went into halftime up 24–14, the Chiefs mounted a comeback to win the game 38–35 with a Harrison Butker game-winning field goal. The 73 combined points was the third-highest scoring Super Bowl game, and the 35 scored by the Eagles were the most by the losing team in the Super Bowl. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was named Super Bowl Most Valuable Player (MVP), completing 21 of 27 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing six times for 44 yards. Mahomes became the first player since Kurt Warner in 1999 to win an NFL MVP and a Super Bowl title in the same season. It was the fourth Super Bowl hosted by the Phoenix metropolitan area, with the most recent previously being Super Bowl XLIX in 2015, also held at State Farm Stadium (then called University of Phoenix Stadium).[4] Fox's broadcast of the game is the third most watched program in American television history. The game was seen by an average of 112.2 million viewers, slightly down from the 112.3 million from Super Bowl LVI, with it reaching 118.7 million during the halftime show, which was headlined by Rihanna.
