Description: Three piece lot: RPPC / Real Photo Post Card + two (2) photographs of the original owner of it -- all are gelatin silver prints. They’re from the collection of a historic Mariposa, CA Gold Mine town Old West family: the Daut, Schroeder / Schanz, and Stewart families. Some history is posted below + see my other listings for 20 other items such as Cabinet Cards and CDV’s from the same collection! Mariposa, near the west entrance to Yosemite National Park, has their Mariposa Museum & History Center where you can learn more about the area, but because of fires, most of the existing buildings in the town were built in the LATE 1850's.In this RPPC, we get to see what Mariposa looked like originally circa 1850 and before photography came around. Under magnification, you can read a sign on one of this small town Main Street dirt road building's storefronts: Southern Miners. There's a wagon on the street and several horses or donkeys along with working people carrying things. This is a crazy rarity amongst RPPC's -- none of them could depict a 19th century scene because RPPC's didn't exist yet.I can’t find any other example of this Real Photo Postcard in existence. I was able to date it to the 1926-1940’s period per the area where a stamp would go -- the “AZO” letters that make up the outlines have squares in each corner.ca. 1850, a traveling California outfit, Britton & Rey, created this rare image: a bird’s eye view / pictorial lettersheet lithograph of the Gold Rush town Mariposa City. You can see pictures of it online like in the LOC, but good luck finding one for sale anywhere. What someone did here was took a photo of an original litho that you can see the folds in, and developed / printed it on photo postcard paper. This RPPC is a gelatin silver print. You can tell when tilting it in the light. Pencil writing across the top back: “Mariposa, Calif - 1852”. Pen writing: “Evelyn”. Items aren’t perfect. Postcard looks like the edge of something pressed on the back and made impressions you can see on the front.Evelyn was the last generation that was directly connected to 19th century gold mining in CA. She’d know the stories first-hand because she, Evelyn Gertrude Stewart Elam (1889-1977), was the daughter of Mariposa gold ore miner George D. Stewart (1862-1935). Her brother, George A. Stewart (1885-1942) is pictured in one of the photos.George Stewart (1824-1883) dealt in liquors. He and his wife Christina Egenhoff were natives of Hanover, Germany. I don’t know that he worked the mines, but his son, George D. Stewart (1862-1935), was a gold ore miner.Frederick Daut (1836-1913) was born in Germany and came to the USA as a young man lured by the California Gold Rush. When he passed away, they referred to him in the papers as “the Mariposa pioneer”.From an 1867 article: “On Monday last, Frederick DAUT and "Indian Tom," both of whom were working for Mr. MALONE, near CLARK's saw mill, Mariposa county, were considerably injured by a premature blast while working in a tail-race of a mining claim. Mr. DAUT had the flesh torn from his hand and his eyes badly burned with powder. Tom was also burned about the face and eyes”.John Schroeder (1830-1912) was originally from Madison, Wisconsin but had also come early on to Mariposa. He discovered Schroeder Mine in 1878.When Schoeder passed, his will was published in the papers and he’d written that his main executor was Fred Daut. Schroeder’s wife (Elizabeth Worther Schoeder aka grandma Schanz Schroder) had been previously married. In his will, John left his stepdaughter, Louisa C. Schanz Stewart (1864-1936; Mrs. George Dietrich Stewart) his house on Saxon’s Creek with gardens, outbuildings, blacksmith’s shop, etc.Schroeder left his buggy to Fred Daut’s daughter, Emilia. He left further property to his daughter Mrs. Carl Schiffer (Theresa Schroeder Schiffer), his son Carl J. Schroeder, etc. See: Mariposa Gazette, Volume LVII, Number 45, 30 March 1912.
