The grading categories are usually done via a visual inspection and a description of what each one means are listed below. The grading can be adjusted up or down by adding plus + or minus - to each grading. Buyers concerned about sound quality issues should request a play-grading before buying. MINT : The record should be in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The sleeve and any extra items such as the lyric sheet/s, booklet or poster should also be in perfect condition. Records advertised, as sealed or unplayed should be Mint. Most record sleeves will have bending creases from the normal factory folding processes. This is accepted as being in mint condition. (Some records particularly from the UK do not receive shirking-wrapping.) EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played or handled, but there should be very little lessening in the sound quality. Some faint hairline surface marks may be present. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and or minor creasing or lightly bruised corners. Any price stickers or sticker shadows should be noted in the description. VERY GOOD : The record has been played many times, but should display no major deterioration in sound quality. The vinyl will have marks and scuffs but should have its original lustre. Some wear like ring-impression or ring-marking or mild shelf-wear on the outer surface of sleeve may be apparent. The inserts may have some handle wear and creasing without any major defects. GOOD : This is a very low grading as the recording has been played a lot so that the sound quality has deteriorated, perhaps with some pops and crackles present. Scratches will be highly visible on the playing surfaces. The cover and contents will have suffered from handling wear, such as half-moon creasing. Bent/creased or bruised corners, scuffing and edge wear or edge splints or minor tears maybe present. Writing and indentation and discoloration may also be present. FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface wear in the form of numerous highly visible scratches, scuffing and loss of shine to the playing surfaces. Noise from playing the recording will be very apparent and it may even jump, skip or get stuck in a groove. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and or defaced. POOR : The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or missing. (this grading is set for fillers in your collection and are usually reserved for very scare and expensive recordings at a bargain price. Until a better copy can be found. Thank You.
