Description: Brendan Anson was the first European settler in what is now called Marshalltown. In April 1851, Anson found what he described as “the prettiest place in Iowa.” On a high point between the Iowa River and Linn Creek, Anson built a log cabin. A plaque at 112 West Main Street marks the site of the cabin. In 1853 Anson named the town Marshall, after Marshall, Michigan, a former residence of his. The town became Marshalltown in 1862 because another Marshall already existed at the time in Henry County, Iowa. With the help of Potawatomi chief Johnny Green, Anson persuaded early settlers to stay in the area. In the mid-1850s, he donated land for a county courthouse and residents donated money for the building’s construction. In 1863 the title of county seat transferred from the village of Marietta to Marshalltown. The young town began growing and had 10,000 residents by 1900s. The bridge on this card, published by the “Souvenir Post Card Co”, is not the famous “concrete arch bridge” on south Third built in 1920 or the one that is currently across Linn Creek. This is the “3rd Avenue Linn Creek Bridge” with no date of construction and was replaced by the famous "Concrete Rainbow Arch” bridge in 1920. According to the “Bridge Hunter”, it was a “Double-barreled Pratt through truss" that is not there anymore but is on this card. The card is in fair to good condition with a bent lower left corner but just minor wear overall. The image is clean and clear as is the reverse. The “Souvenir Post Card Co.” produced cards in New York, from 1905 and 1914. That makes this card pre 1914 and it is a divided back, so it was made after 1907. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.
