This is an evergreen shrub, which means the leaves will still be on the plant even in its dormant state. The stem will be strewn with buds for this coming spring's growth. If you live in a southern state, these will push new growth upon planting them as dormancy is dependent on hours of daylight and temperature. It typically grows in mountain thickets. General Description: Medium sized evergreen shrub, widely cultivated in gardens that has brilliant red new growth that matures to green with silvery white margins. Hardiness Zone: 4 to 8 Maintenance: Low Mature Height: 8 to 12 feet Mature Width: 6 to 8 feet Plant Details: Growth Habit: Slow growing, upright shrub with a rounded shape, often multi-stemmed. Leaf Structure: The leaves appear in a crowded rosette-like cluster near the branch tips. Young leaves appear red with pink margins that mature to green with silvery white margins. They are oblong in shape. Stem Structure: Green to gold-yellow. Bark Structure: Dark brown and has the appearance of being vertically fissured when mature. Soil Preference: Sand, Clay.
