Description: This listing is for 12+ Armadillidium Pallasii Orange Isopods. You will receive a mix of juveniles and adults with a few extra to offset any possible losses in the shipping process. This color morph of the common dark brown wild type is still very rare in the hobby and highly sought out by those looking for the less than typical isopod. Also called the "Croatian Giant" this species can reach larger sizes of around 1 inch rivaling that of A. Gestroi and similar. They are a pleasant soft semi translucent orange with some nearly bordering pink and others a more dark pronounced orange. Armadillidium Pallasii is a fairly easy isopod to keep without any extensive demands outside of typical isopod husbandry. One key difference is that they do prefer it slightly moist. More so than any other typical armadillidium, but not at a tropical level like a cubaris. Cultures can quickly waste away if their enclosure is allowed to get too dry. A standard moisture gradient is fine so long as the dry side still has at least a nominal amount of moisture to it. A 6 quart gasket sealed storage bin or small glass aquarium is sufficient for a small starter culture. Standard or bioactive enclosures can be enhanced with natural botanical items to simulate the isopods habitat in the wild. This helps them feel secure which in turn promotes their natural processes like eating and breeding. Average room temperature in the low to mid 70sF will suit them just fine. Around one third to half of the enclosure should have damp (not wet) sphagnum moss with the remainder being slightly drier, but not completely devoid of some moisture. They will often migrate between moist and dry areas at different times of the day. A few pieces of cork bark strategically placed over some of the moist side will help retain the humidity levels and reduce the frequency of watering needed to maintain a proper moisture gradient. They do seem to enjoy concave cork bark and will huddle up in high numbers on the underside. Isopods are detritivores. Their primary diet in nature is leaf litter and decayed wood. Both of these should always be available in abundance. They will also happily consume any other decomposing organic plant or animal matter they come across. As such it is vital to supplement your isopods with other food sources on a semi regular basis. They enjoy food options like squash, radishes, carrots and other veggies along with commercial isopod powdered food like Repashy. They also need some occasional protein in their diets which can be things like freeze dried minnows, shrimp, fish pellets, dried insects and other protein based food sources. Be sure to feed these on the drier side as they can spoil quickly in humid environments and attract unwanted pests. Also provide a solid calcium source like cuttle bone. They will devour them with enthusiasm whenever offered. Armadillidium Pallasii "Orange" is a unique and and colorful isopod and though while still not widely available, they are not overly challenging or risky to keep like some other species. They are on the slow side for breeding, but once established they will reproduce regularly and with good care can be quite prolific! Our culture started with around 20+ a year or so ago and is now finally thriving with new life to where we can offer this rare and desirable isopod for your collection! Please note depending on the factors that affect how a specific live animal(s) order is boxed up, the lead time can be 1-2 days from the time the order is placed. We will make every effort to ship quick as possible, but the welfare of the animals will always come first. If temperatures between origin and destination is forecast to be over 90°F, or below 40°F, we reserve the right to hold the order until weather conditions are more favorable for live animal shipping. If weather is determined to cause more than a minimal delay we will contact you or issue a refund if we can't establish communication in 24 hours or less. We use heating and cooling elements as needed to ensure safety for the isopods. We will happily combine shipping on all orders to which it applies. LAG (Live Arrival Guarantee) only applies with "hold for pick up" through UPS. This is the EXPEDITED shipping option when checking out. Hold for pick up while not required in all cases is highly encouraged to minimize the chance of the animals perishing. Packages left outside on a doorstep or similar significantly elevates the risk factor. Regular sunlight even in fair weather conditions can quickly raise temperatures to deadly levels inside of the box. LAG orders will be delivered to the nearest UPS store of the delivery address. UPS stores will hold the package up to 3 days before it's RTS (returned to sender). If a package isn't picked up in the 3 day window and is returned to us, this greatly increases the odds of the isopods perishing. LAG protection requires delivery to a UPS store & you must pick up the package the same business day it's first available. No refunds for unclaimed packages returned to sender. If you elect EXPEDITED shipping at checkout, please send a message immediately after you make your purchase to indicate you want LAG coverage using UPS hold for pick up. You are welcome to provide us a preferred UPS store location or we will provide the nearest UPS store location to your shipping address if needed.
