Description: About the Painting: Title: Claudelle (1998)Medium: Oil on CanvasDimensions: 45" X 45" Sometimes dreams don’t come true. It’s hard for most considerate people to accept the reality of who they are. Wrapped with blankets, garbage bags and two umbrellas propped up, freezing rain and snow was falling on Claudelle while trying to sleep. But all Claudelle could think about was other homeless people freezing in Canada. Support a Noble Cause: The National Coalition for the Homeless is humbled to share this heartfelt opportunity: an auction of a painting that speaks to both struggle and hope, dedicated to a cause that impacts us all. By supporting this effort, you’re embracing a piece of art that goes beyond the canvas—it carries a story, a spirit, and a vision for change. This painting is the work of Tammy DeGruchy Grubbs, a deeply committed activist who knows the harsh realities of homelessness firsthand. With every brushstroke, Tammy captures voices often lost in society's margins, bringing life to stories that demand to be seen. Her dedication knows no bounds; beyond her art, she has tirelessly led campaigns for hunger and homelessness across the nation, shining a light on the resilience and courage of those who are so often unseen. By joining us in this auction, you’re not just bidding on a painting; you’re becoming part of a movement for compassion and change. Let’s come together, inspired by Tammy’s vision, to help create a future where art and activism intertwine to uplift lives. With every contribution, we’re not just supporting a cause—we’re igniting hope, one painting, one person, one community at a time. About the Painter: Tammy, an unwavering advocate and artist, has dedicated her career since 1995 to amplifying the voices of those experiencing homelessness. Her commitment is rooted in a deeply personal experience of teenage homelessness, which made her keenly aware of the harsh realities faced by the homeless. What troubled her further was the stark inconsistency in how the media portrayed this vulnerable population. During the holiday season, the homeless were often cast as "the needy," eliciting calls for compassion and support. Yet, as the year wore on, the narrative shifted, with the homeless depicted as drunks, derelicts, or burdens on society. This painful duality drove Tammy to confront the stereotypes that fuel societal prejudice and dehumanization. In May 1999, Tammy took a groundbreaking step by collaborating with Michael Stoops of the National Coalition for the Homeless to unveil the largest-ever oil painting exhibit on homelessness. This exhibit, portraying both urban and rural homelessness, challenged ingrained misconceptions and invited viewers to see homelessness from a compassionate perspective. But Tammy’s advocacy didn’t stop at the gallery walls—she led hunger and homelessness campaigns and curated exhibits across the nation, relentlessly pushing for empathy and awareness. Tammy's artistry and advocacy are a powerful testament to her mission: to dismantle the stereotypes surrounding homelessness and inspire a more compassionate, humanized understanding. Through her work, she urges society to see the resilience and humanity within the homeless community and underscores the urgent need to end the damaging effects of stigmatization.
