Description: "History of the Seven Wise Men of Rome" A very rare little volume with a somewhat odd title since it purports to contain "many Pleasant and Witty Stories very Delightful to Read" containing moral lessons. The stories are of kings and emperors of Rome but these seem to have little bearing on the actual history of Rome (?) Published by Crowden and Johnston, London. No publication date but Six and Twentieth edition equates to approximately 1685 (WorldCat). Size 6.7" x 3.5"Pages 144 Strongly bound with a new leather spine and the original leather covers all in very good condition. Inside pages are generally clean with no foxing. Few corners turned/creased. The Frontispiece has been repaired top and bottom and some of the missing title page has been substituted with a facsimile. There are approximately 23 delightful in-text wood-cut engravings. A very rare opportunity to acquire a 340 year old book aimed as moral instruction particularly for the youth.Very few copies as old as this still exist.
