PRESIDENT HARRY S TRUMAN - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 01/16/1958 - HFSID 15519 HARRY S TRUMAN President Truman writes thanks to Hildegarde for her Christmas card, and discusses Minuet in G Typed Letter Signed: "Harry Truman", 1p, 7¼x10½. Independence, Missouri, 1958 January 16. To entertainer Hildegarde. In full: "Mrs. Truman and I were delighted to receive your Christmas card. You were kind and thoughtful to remember us. We are deeply appreciative and hope that 1958 will be a year of great success and happiness for you." In a postscript, Truman handwrites: "Can you do that 'turn' in the Minuet in G now?" President Truman's mother, Martha Young Truman (1852-1947), saw that her son Harry had musical talent so she sent him to get professional piano lessons with a woman named Mrs. Edwin C. White. Everyone in his family thought that Harry would become a concert pianist; Harry thought so too. Mrs. White had been a student of the great Polish pianist, Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860-1941). When Paderewski was having a concert in their town, Harry's teacher brought him to the concert and introduced the young boy to Paderewski, who showed Truman how to play his own famous composition, "Minuet in G". Years later, President Truman played Paderewski's "Minuet in G" for his mother in the White House. HILDEGARDE's international popularity came when her manager, Anna Sosenko, wrote a song especially for her, in which English and French words were skillfully mixed. The song, "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup" was recorded by Hildegarde in 1941 for Decca Records. In the late 1940s and through the 1950s, Hildegarde was considered by many to be the top dinner and supper club entertainer in America. Lightly creased. Slight ink transference at blank areas.
