Edward VII Coronation Mug 1902 - William Lowe

Description: This is one for serious royal collectors. A 1902 coronation mug from the William Lowe Staffordshire Pottery. Lowe was originally was in partnership with John Tams at the sT. Gergory Works. They split up in 1875. In 1879 he built the Syndey Works and worked there until he died in 1898. The business continued under his name. This mug is unusual. It is dated for the actual date of the coronation, August 1902, rather than the original planned date of June 1902. Most souvenir producers continued to produce with the old date. The transfer image is very rich. Queen Alexandra with a very high headpiece surmounted by an Imperial Crown. Edward is styled as The King of the Dominions Beyond the Sea. The decoration includes the English Rose and Scottish Thistle. A Union Flag and the Royal Standard are each side of the royal couple. Smaller flags combining the cross of St. George (England) and the cross of St. Andrew (Scotland) and the flag of the British Merchant Marine stand each side of the Royal Crest. The decoration is rich with symbolism. The mug has gilt decoration on the rim, the pediment and the handle. Excellent condition.
