Description: A very interesting opera themed Surrealist color aquatint etching from German master printmaker Johannes Vennekamp (b.1935). The work is dated to 1976 and the text within the print alludes to Wagner's opera Lohengrin and the swan symbolism therein. The plate measures 5 3/4 x 4 inches and the sheet measures approx. 14 x 11 3/4 inches. It is printed on cream colored wove paper with a deckel edge to the right and is hand signed, dated and numbered in pencil by the artist. The reverse shows some spotting in the margins and some handling grime, otherwise the print is in excellent condition and ready for framing. Johannes Vennekamp (born March 12, 1935 in Istanbul) is a well regarded German graphic artist and painter. In 1963, he founded the Rixdorfer Drucke workshop in Berlin with Uwe Bremer, Albert Schindehütte and Arno Waldschmidt. Difficult to classify, Vennekamp's ouevre is most often identified with surrealism. Fascinated by music, he has created numerous portraits of musicians as well as opera and jazz themed etchings.
