Description: Auction is for an original model 1860 cavalry saber made by DJ Millard of New York. Millard held a single contract in 1862 for production of 10,000 sabers. Such a small production run of sabers, makes this sword less commonly seen compared to examples of higher production likes Ames or Roby. This sword has a 34 3/4 inch long blade that is medium grey in color with some discoloration. No sharpening, but it has some small edge nicks along its length. Blade point is fine, and the blade is straight with no bends. The pommel cap is C.E.W inspected for Charles E Wilson as well as being W.E.H inspected on the opposite side of the pommel. Blade is inspector marked and dated 1862 and maker marked on the opposite side. Leather is worn off most of the grip and wire is 99% gone. Hilt, and grip are tight to the blade with no wiggles. Blade still has leather bump washer at its base. Iron scabbard is in good shape with no noticeable dents to its body. Has a plumb brown patina with pitting from being 160 years old. Blade has a nice draw in and out of scabbard. Great example of an early war production M1860 Yankee saber by a rare maker. Would be a great piece to have the leather grip wrap/wire restored on.
