DETAIL: Traveling internationally as part of my occupation, I continually have friends and customers ask me to bring back to the USA Pepsi and Coca-Cola cans and bottles from elsewhere in the world. Surprisingly, I have had many friends and customers outside of the USA ask me to secure for them collectible cans of Coca-Cola and Pepsi. Here’s one such offering, an unopened (but emptied) can of Berry Punch Crush, clad in the 2014 livery which promoted the 2014 release of the Paramount Picture's film "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". Crush was originally produced as "Ward's Orange Crush in 1911 (with bits of orange pulp inside). Though invented in Chicago (Evanston) Illinois, the flavor was perfected in 1916 in the company's Los Angeles laboratory located close to Southern California's famed orange groves. The orange flavor was quickly followed by a lemon flavor in 1919, then a lime flavor in 1920. The company was sold to Proctor & Gamble in 1980. Today Crush is generally associated with Pepsi Distributors, though technically it is owned by the Dr. Pepper/Snapple Group, and it is distributed by Coca-Cola Distributors in Latin America. But here in the USA, Crush is still generally associated with Pepsi. This series of cans promotes a 2014 live-action film, produced by Platinum Dunes, Nickelodeon Movies, and Paramount Pictures. The subject of the film was of course the Ninja Turtles, originally known as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are four fictional teen-aged anthropomorphic turtles named after four Renaissance Italian artists. They were trained by their anthropomorphic rat sensei in the art of ninjutsu. From their home in sewers of New York City, they battle petty criminals, evil overlords, mutated animals, and alien invaders while attempting to remain hidden from society. The characters originated in comic books published by Mirage Studios before expanding into cartoon series, films, video games, toys, and other general merchandise. During the peak of the franchise's popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s, it gained worldwide success and fame. This particular can commemorates the character "Leonardo", who is described on the can: "Leonardo is the oldest, wisest, and most cautious Turtle, the one who always plays by the rules. He also bears the great burden of being the team's chosen leader. Leo is dedicated to perfecting his ninjutsu skills and will stop at nothing to defend his brothers and the entire city. Wearing a blue bandana, with katanas holstered in his belt, Leo firmly believes it his his ninja duty to protect all people." Many collectors ask for empty cans. The normal procedure is to carefully drill two small holes into the bottom of the can, being carefully not to damage the can, and then shaking it to make sure all of the contents are remove, and carefully rinsing it. The end result is an emptied can which still looks full (as the two tiny holes are underneath the bottom of the can), it’s still sealed, but it is empty of contents. It is cleaned, and ready to ship, albeit carefully packaged as an empty soda can is actually very fragile and susceptible to damage. Again, it is unopened, but empty. If you’re in the USA, this might not at first blush seem a “collectible”. But then in Russia for instance, a can of Coca-Cola printed in their Cyrillic alphabet might not seem very unusual or collectible to a Russia. But to an American, the Russian can is quite collectible, and in Europe or Asia, likewise, American cans are collectible.
