When I saw this authentic Basque beret I immediately thought of the anti-fascist Basque fighters who fought so bravely for freedom during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). They fought against Francisco Franco who was supported by Mussolini, Hitler and other international dictators. Though the Basques fought fiercely Franco won and remained a ruthless dictator till the Seventies. Picasso's powerful anti-war painting (see pictures) is based on the destruction of the Basque town of Guernica. So this hat might be considered an anti-fascist hat. Made of black wool it has a stitched brown-& red-leather band around the exterior & a little red bow in front is in very good condition.
