The scholarly notes, though condensed from the original facsicule commentary, remain a copious and enlightened compendium of 20th century biblical scholarship. Following the Papal encyclical of 1943 which lifted restrictions on the use of ancient manuscripts in biblical interpretation and translation, The Jerusalem Bible was the first Catholic vernacular translation to be made from the ancient manuscripts independently of the Vulgate and given imprimatur.
