The cover design is described by Colin White as one of “the most splendid covers that J. M. King ever devised” and the subject is a prototype “of all the forlorn princesses that Jessie was ever to draw. Their faces, usually in profile or three-quarter view, were not always beautiful . . . Jessie’s princesses were attractive because they looked ingenuous and helpless, rather than arrogant in their beauty.” King’s signature using a ‘y’ at the end of her first name is likely the only instance that appears on her book covers. Condition:Good.The covers are vivid and generally clean and bright with denting and rubbing to the board edges, paper loss to the corners as well as a few inches of the board edges, and scuffs and smudges. The textblock is solid and square though the hinge-papers are split between the endpapers. The pages are clean and bright though there is a thin open tear to the bottom edge of the first three pages and a thin water stain to the bottom edge of the remaining pages. The front free endpaper and the title page have a small square cut out of them. Remains of an old inscription dated 1902 to the front free endpaper. No other writing or marking.
