Description: This listing is for an original 1899 anti-semitic poster from the Musée Des Horreurs series of posters made in France by an artist using the pseudonym V. Lenepveu and featuring caricatures of various individuals involved in the Dreyfus Affair in France. This has been professionally mounted on linen. Some tears and fold lines were professionally repaired during the mounting process. This hand colored lithograph poster is "No 20 Boum boum! madame!!". This poster pictures a caricature of Émile Loubet as a creature in a clown costume selling matches. Loubet became President of France in 1899 and promoted Dreyfus' innocence, eventually remitting Dreyfus' 10-year imprisonment sentence. Dreyfus was falsely convicted of treason, tortured, and exiled for allegedly selling French military intelligence to the Germans in 1895. In 1906, an appeals court pronounced Dreyfus' innocence and he was re-instated in the army and promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. For 51 weeks, a different poster was printed until the French government put a stop to them. Anti-semitism was rampant in France during this time period.
