Description: Recognized as the first modern American labor strike, workers at Carnegie's Homestead Works were organized by The Amalgamated Association of Iron & Steel. The strike would see the first public defeat of private Pinkerton Police and of course an attempt on Henry Clay Frick's life by Alexander Berkman. When months of decreased production threatened a new navy contract, Carnegie arranged for Pennsylvania Governor Robert E. Pattinson to declare martial law on the town of Homestead and dispatch the Pennsylvania National Guard. Rare evidence documenting the occupation, identified Atchinson & Beaty // Homestead PA // July 11 to Sept 16, 1892. Signed Merriman View Co. // Allegheny PA. Heavy soiling w/ abrasions to margins.
