Colton map of the Austrian empire. Like most of Colton's Europe maps, this map was derived from an earlier wall map of the world produced by Colton and D. Griffing Johnson. The map depicts the territories claimed by the once vast Austrian empire, including in whole or part the modern-day nations of Austria, Hungary, Germany, Italy, Albania, Croatia, Romania, Poland, and the Czech Republic. An inset map of the environs of Vienna is situated in the lower right corner. Regions within the vast Austrian Empire are shaded different colors, allowing for easy identification of the diversity of the empire. Numerous cities, towns, and villages are labeled throughout the map, including Budapest, Vienna, Krakow, Prague, Pilsen, Linz, Milan, and Venice. Myriad rivers, roads, railroads, canals, and other topographical features are illustrated. Also included are various battlefields, including the 1757 Battle of Prague during the Seven Years' War. The whole is surrounded by Colton's signature spiral motif border. The Austrian Empire, founded in 1804 by the last Holy Roman emperor, Francis II, lasted only till 1866. It was transformed into the Austro-Hungarian empire after Austria was defeated in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. Dated and copyrighted to J. H. Colton, 1855. Published from Colton's 172 William Street Office in New York City, this map was issued as plate no. 17 in volume 2 of Colton's 1857 Atlas of the World.
